Objective

The objective of chess is to achieve checkmate. This occurs when the other player attacks the king by putting it into a position where it can be capured, or placed into check, and in addition to being in check, the king cannot escape capture by using another piece to block capture nor can the king move out of check. Note that checkmate renders the capture of the king unnecessary since it is a foregone conclusion and the game ends at that time, although many players will tip the king over on its side to admit defeat. If, however, a player's king is not directly attacked, and thus not actually in check, but the only move they can make would place the king into check (which is an illegal move), this is a stalemate and is the chess game is considered a draw.
